Report Cards

Report cards will be going home today. What you will see on these two pages is a fraction of what I would like to be able to share with you in person. I find the format we use limited and I’m hoping that someday we will have the freedom to include pictures, videos and interviews to support what we are sharing with the parents.

When you open the envelope with your child, please take the time to talk to her about her work habits as these can be very informative. Please remind your child to not compare her grades with others. Although some may end up with the same letter grade, what they are able to do in real life may look very different.

 

It is also a good moment to reflect on the great things that took place during the term and to discuss the effort your child has put into his work. If your child is unhappy about something, please encourage him to talk to me about it. Although we have two formal goal-setting conferences per year, we can take the time to discuss new goals together and develop a list of strategies to reach these goals.

Good morning parents,

Report cards are going home today. Since Grade 4 students will be receiving a letter grade for the first time, I’d like to share some important information with you. As a reference point, I also recommend that you take a look at your child’s Grade 3 report card and use the following scale if unsure about letter grades:

Exceeds = A

Fully Meets = B (very good performance) or C+ (good performance)

Meets = C

Approaching = C-

If wanting to know more about your child’s progress, we encourage you to focus on the checklists that will appear on page 1.

Other thoughts:

1. Work Habits are important. Students who have good work habits will usually do better in school. I say “usually” because there are always exceptions. My husband is a perfect example of this! – He’s the one who suggested that I write it as he was proofreading my blog post this morning. 🙂

2. Social Responsibility is also another important area to consider. The Ministry of Education has created the “BC Performance Standards” which we refer to regularly.

Here’s a simplified version of one of the rubrics teachers have access to:

3. A report card is a snapshot of your child’s learning at the time we write the report card.

Please note that not all subject areas will have a checklist to accompany the letter grade. We are mandated to use a checklist for French Language Arts, English Language Arts & Mathematics every term but we will use a checklist for Science, Social Studies, Health & Career, PE, Fine Arts & Music only once during the school year.

We also alternate between Science and Social Studies each term and this term, there will be no grade for Science.

At the end of the report card, you will also find a few comments about ways to support your child, at school and at home. Please take the time to review your child’s goals.

Giving Feedback

I just realised that many of the posts I have been trying to make have ended up in my “drafts” and weren’t published. Here is the first of a one I just found. I modified the words a bit so that it makes more sense. Will try to post the others in the next few days. It’s been crazy on my side, which explains my lack of communication on the blog.

 

Two weeks ago, the students practiced giving feedback to another group of students. We connected with a Grade 7 class from a different French Immersion school and watched one of the projects they were working on at the time (what we saw was their rough copy). The students were able to talk in real-time using a very neat online program. I’ve kept the chat room private which is why you won’t be able to access our discussion. To give you a better idea, I’ve done a screen shot of the exchange we had.

The Power of Feedback

For the first time in my career, I did not use letter grades with my students this year (aside from what shows on the report cards). We provided a lot of oral feedback to each other instead. As a result of this, I notice that the students are more focused on the “journey” than on the “destination”. This is completely amazing and is transforming my teaching.
